Art & Ideas, a thought-provoking series of presentations, offers an enriching complement to the current exhibitions by drawing meaningful connections to the themes explored in them. Through engaging discussions with prominent artists and experts, Art & Ideas provides a unique opportunity to delve deeper into the inspiration, techniques, and perspectives behind the art on display.
In Search of the Group of Seven follows authors and wilderness photographers Joanie and Gary McGuffin, and art historian Michael Burtch as they search for the locations visited by Canada's most celebrated landscape painters who captured the spirit of the land, water, and skies of northern Ontario in the 1920's. Many of the Group of Seven's canvases and sketches have become iconic representations of the Canadian soul. Filmed on location in the Algoma region and along the north shore of Lake Superior, the film combines original photography, archival materials, paintings and re-creations.
Artist Jon Sasaki will lead a tour of his exhibition Homage, describing the process of growing microbial colonies from historic objects, examining how the project relates to his longstanding interest in the Canadian Landscape painting tradition, and the way that artistic depictions of nature dovetail with broader questions around Canadian national identity. The informal walkthrough will be conversational, with attendee input welcomed throughout.
For over 30 years the McGuffins have been a voice for the landscapes we know and love, particularly Canada’s North inspiring people to re-connect with the natural world. Joanie and Gary McGuffin join us to speak about their search for iconic locations captured by artists from The Group of Seven and their documentary, Painted Land.
